TOTAL HIP REPLACEMENT The hip joint is a type of ball and socket joint. The ball is formed by the head of the thigh bone (femur) and the socket is formed by part of the pelvis (acetabulum). Usually the surfaces of the bones are covered with a smooth coating (articular cartilage). This allows smooth, pain free movement in all directions. The damaged femoral head is removed and replaced with a metallic stem that is placed in to the hollow center of the femur. A metal or ceramic ball is placed on the upper part of the stem.
