Everything you need to know about Shoulder Pain, Causes, Symptoms and Diagnosis
While
there are hundreds of articles, blogs and videos to help people with an
awareness on shoulder problems that an average of three in ten adults
encounter, we present to you a snapshot of everything you need to know
about the shoulder pain.
The
shoulders are the most mobile of all the joints in the body and
adequately versatile in movements. Because of the wide range of
movements, a shoulder is more prone to injuries than other joints. If
there is a difficulty or discomfort in raising your arm above your head,
then it is a clear indication that there is a serious issue with the
shoulder which could eventually be a frozen shoulder or rotator cuff
injury or might even end up with a dislocated shoulder.
Before
we get into the causes for the pain, it is important for an individual
to know how a shoulder works. The shoulder is a ball-and-socket joint
that is made up of three bones: Humerus (your upper arm bone), Scapula
(your shoulder blade) and Clavicle (your collarbone). All these bones
are cushioned by a layer of cartilage.
The shoulder has two main joints: Acromioclavicular joint and Glenohumeral joint. The acromioclavicular joint is between the highest part of the scapula and the clavicle.
Whereas,
the glenohumeral joint is made up of the top, ball-shaped part of the
humerus bone and the outer edge of the scapula, which is also known as
the shoulder joint.
Root Cause for Shoulder Pain:
Pain
in the shoulder can have many origins. You might injure your shoulder
while playing sports, injure it when you had a fall, from the accident,
from repetitive injury, sleeping habits, etc. Sometimes, shoulder pain
comes from a condition like arthritis as well. It even emanates from
problems or diseases in other parts of the body (gallbladder, liver,
heart, etc.) that bring about pain which travels to the shoulder. This
referred pain could also be one of the causes.
However,
sometimes it can be difficult to evaluate the cause of some shoulder
pain as the joint has so many moving parts. While there are a number of
common conditions that are known to be a reason for discomfort, below
are the categories that are mostly the reasons behind the pain.
- Rotator Cuff
- Bursitis Shoulder
- Shoulder Dislocation (Instability)
- Frozen Shoulder
- Fractures
- Shoulder Arthritis
- Impingement
